  • Kolkata snatches IPL 5 Title from two time champions Chennai Super Kings

    6:16 am on May 26, 2012 | 0 Comment Permalink | Reply

A nail biting win against Chennai Super Kings by Kolkata Knight Riders will be memorable win for Riders and their owner Shah Rukh Khan.

Being the champion for the past two seasons, Chennai Super Kings missed the chance this time when just 2 balls were left and Shakib Al Hasan and Manoj Tiwary sealed the match by two consecutive boundaries in Dwayne Bravo’s over.

A last moment change by Kolkata Knight Riders by letting Brendon McCullum sitting on dug and giving a chance to Manvinder Bisla (89) who knocked out some good stroke helped Knight Riders to win the title.

Bisla was not alone; Jacques Kallis (69) also contributed well in the innings. However, he was caught in the boundary line by R Jadeja at the crucial moment.

A chase of 191 for Riders seemed easy until Bisla and Kallis got out, but Shakib and Tiwary did well by playing sensible in last couple of overs. CSK bowlers and skipper MS Dhoni left clueless and tried every bit to stop the win but eventually failed in getting the title for the third time.

Shakib who was once caught during Ben Hilfenhaus bowling but was given not out as it was a no ball due to waist high.

Chennai Super Kings, at the early batting stage displayed a good spirit with good opening by Murli Vijay (42) and Mike Hussey (54). But Suresh Raina (63) batted exceptionally.

Brett Lee (0/42) was hit badly in his every over, along with Suresh Narine (0/37). Even CSK bowlers were not sparred as Dwayne Bravo (1/49) and R Ashwin (1/41) gave away too many runs.

However, it was the night for Knight Riders and successful raise the IPL 5 season trophy.

Skipper Gautam Gambhir said, “Only one word comes to mind, mission accomplished. We knew we had the side to go all the way. People had questioned our middle order but I knew they would come good when it really mattered. Balaji is our unsung hero, it was tough for him to miss out on this match before his home crowd and we were playing for him. It is tough to go out and chase 190 against a home side that is defending their title. It just shows Bisla’s character that he could go out there and play such an innings. I think it is the team that makes a captain look good. I wore my pads through the innings as a superstition but then again the guys played some brilliant cricket. I want to thank Kolkata for their support and I hope we have made them very happy tonight.”

    Squad:

Chennai Super Kings: Murali Vijay, Michael Hussey, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Albie Morkel, S Badrinath, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shadab Jakati, Ben Hilfenhaus
